Two gunmen affiliated with ISIS cells threw a grenade at the house of a civilian in Theban town in the eastern Deir Ezzor countryside. The civilian, who owns a shop selling mobile phones, was targeted because he had not paid Zakat.
According to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, the incident occurred in the village of Theban, located east of Deir Ez-Zor. The targeted individual was the owner of a mobile phone shop, from whom ISIS demanded money.
It is important to highlight that in Syria’s Deir ez-Zor region, the Khariji group forcibly extorts money from the populace under the guise of charity and zakat. In instances of non-compliance, they resort to attacking civilians and their homes.
