Pakistan’s military regime’s president, Asif Ali Zardari, signed and announced a decision on Sunday to declare a state of emergency and impose Governor’s Rule in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) province.
According to media reports, acting on the advice of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s cabinet, Zardari declared the emergency under Article 232 of Pakistan’s Constitution. Under Article 234, all executive powers of the province have been transferred to the governor.
With this decision, the provincial government of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, led by Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party, has been stripped of its powers, and the provincial assembly has been dissolved.
Ten days earlier, Al-Mirsaad reported, citing its sources, that Pakistan’s federal government, which is fully controlled by the military, was planning to impose an emergency in KP and strip the provincial government of its powers.
