Freedom is one of the greatest and most valuable ideas in human life. Throughout history, it has stirred the minds of nations, given rise to revolutions, inspired philosophies, and driven generations to make sacrifices for its sake. But freedom is not merely a political term. It is also a human and philosophical question tied to the deeper issues of a person’s character, conscience, dignity, will, and responsibility.
From an Islamic point of view, freedom does not mean being allowed to do whatever one wants. Rather, it means having the right to live with dignity within the bounds of what is right. Since freedom is part of human dignity, the Islamic understanding of freedom begins with the position of the human being.
The Holy Quran says: “And We have certainly honored the children of Adam…”
This verse lays down a fundamental principle of human dignity. A human being is not merely a number in an economic, political, or social system. He is a creation endowed with dignity. For this reason, Islam does not accept humiliation, oppression, tyranny, or unjust domination over people. Human dignity requires that a person should have control over his own will in the lawful affairs of his life, so that he does not become a victim of oppression.
This is why the Islamic view presents a complete and profound understanding of freedom, one that was unprecedented in its time. Yet the high value of freedom comes under threat when forces of disbelief invade Muslim lands and oppress their people, property, and honor. In such a situation, freeing oneself from occupation becomes a religious obligation.
Those who make sacrifices on this path are remembered by history forever as mujahideen, martyrs, and heroes of freedom.
Freedom from occupiers is achieved through jihad. Jihad is a pillar of the religion and a path to honor and dignity. In human history, one of the greatest and most sacred struggles is the struggle to protect a nation’s land, honor, religion, and identity. Freedom from occupation is not merely a political goal. It is one of the deepest needs of human nature.
For this reason, freedom is a mark of a nation’s honor and the greatest inheritance it can leave to future generations. Nations may lose their wealth, their economies may become weak, and they may rebuild them over the years. But when a nation loses its freedom, it loses a great part of its identity, its will, and its ability to determine its own destiny. Freedom is a blessing whose true value is often best understood by those who have tasted the bitterness of occupation and tyranny. A free person, therefore, does not simply live on free soil. He also preserves his thoughts, conscience, will, and human dignity.
Islam also opened the door to knowledge with the word “Iqra” and called human beings toward knowledge, reflection, and responsibility. A nation that possesses knowledge, knows its history, and thinks about its future is far more capable of protecting its freedom. Freedom has a deep connection with knowledge. An uneducated nation finds it difficult to protect its independence.
Freedom cannot be preserved through emotions alone. It requires knowledge, experience, a strong economy, law, and a firm Islamic and national consciousness. Economic independence is also one of the important foundations of freedom.
A nation that cannot provide for its own economy, production, knowledge, industry, and basic needs will always face difficulties in resisting foreign influence. Political independence, therefore, must go hand in hand with economic, scientific, and social strength. A nation that understands the value of its freedom remains vigilant in protecting its honor, identity, independence, national values, and future. Freedom is not secured simply by achieving it. It requires protection, sacrifice, vigilance, and responsibility.
For a Muslim nation, freedom takes on its full meaning when there is also an opportunity to respect and protect religious values and Islamic practices. If a nation forgets the value of its independence, it will move according to the wishes of others. But if a nation remains united, aware, dignified, and firm in protecting its national identity, no power can easily force it away from the path of independence.
Likewise, a generation that knows its history, religion, identity, and the value of freedom will never sell its future cheaply. Let us honor the sacrifices of those who came before us, protect the values of our homeland, hold firmly to the rope of unity, and preserve our freedom for future generations with dignity, awareness, and responsibility.
