The Syrian Ministry of Interior has announced the successful capture of six ISIS militants and the killing of two others during a series of security operations targeting ISIS hideouts in the capital, Damascus.
According to a press release issued by the Interior Ministry of the newly established government, the operations were carried out on Monday (2 Saratan / 26 Dhu al-Hijjah) in the Harasta and Kafr Batna areas of Damascus. These operations targeted residences where ISIS militants were believed to be hiding.
The ministry confirmed that six individuals were apprehended alive, including a senior figure within an ISIS network. Two others were killed during the raids. Among the deceased was a militant reportedly involved in facilitating the entry of a suicide bomber into the Mar Elias Church.
Security forces recovered a cache of weapons and explosive materials from the targeted locations, including a suicide vest, landmines, a motorcycle, firearms, and various other munitions.
These counterterrorism operations followed a deadly suicide bombing on Sunday at the Mar Elias Church in Damascus, which resulted in dozens of casualties. While ISIS has not officially claimed responsibility for the attack, a newly emerged group calling itself Saraya Ansar al-Sunnah has taken credit. The group has publicly expressed support for ISIS’s extremist ideology and is believed to maintain operational ties with the organization.
