Palestine: A Testament to Steadfastness, Sacrifice, and the Promise of Freedom

By Akbar Jamal

For decades, the blessed land of Palestine has stood as a battleground of oppression and aggression. Yet in recent years, Israel’s brutal assault on Gaza has shattered every previous record of savagery. This is not simply a regional conflict. It is a test of humanity’s dignity and the world’s conscience. The bombardment of innocent children, defenseless women, and unarmed civilians is a stain on the face of this era that history will never forget.

And yet, against all of this, the iron will of the Palestinian people has proven something the powerful would rather not acknowledge: no material force can stand against the strength of faith and the hunger for freedom. In this struggle, the role of Hamas’s leadership and its military wing is a luminous chapter in the history of resistance. Commanders like Izz al-Din al-Haddad, who devised defensive strategies under conditions of almost unimaginable pressure and mounted a genuine challenge to one of the most technologically advanced military machines on earth, have left even military analysts astonished.

Hamas, under relentless siege and continuous aerial bombardment, has displayed a courage that calls to mind Ibrahim (AS) walking calmly into Nimrod’s fire. Such steadfastness deserves to be remembered as one of the noblest examples of perseverance in modern history. The martyrdoms of courageous commanders like Izz al-Din al-Haddad are, on the surface, a source of immense grief for the Ummah. But in truth, these sacrifices are the very fuel that keeps the resistance burning.

That blood generates a power no weapon can match. The martyrs become beacons for Palestinian youth, who rise from the rubble crying “Allahu Akbar” and “Ahad, Ahad,” showing the world that truth does not break. Their sacrifice strengthens the resolve of the oppressed and becomes, for generations to come, a symbol of what it means to endure. Gaza today lays bare the indifference of global powers and the failure of international law. On one side, advanced weaponry and the backing of the world’s most powerful states. On the other, unarmed mujahideen whose only wealth is faith, devotion to the First Qibla, and loyalty to their land.

Despite a severe humanitarian catastrophe, shortages of food, medicine, and water, and constant pressure to abandon their homes, Palestinians have chosen to die on their own soil rather than abandon it. Their message is clear: the voice of truth cannot be burned by gunpowder.

The Palestinian struggle is not merely about territory. It is a defense of Islam’s first Qiblah, of Al-Aqsa Mosque, and of the honor of the Muslim Ummah. This place is the spiritual center of the entire Ummah, and so the cry of Gaza is, in truth, a knock on the door of the Islamic world’s conscience.

The criminal silence of the international community and the impotence of global institutions have made one thing plain: the scales of justice are in the hands of the powerful. But Palestinians have demonstrated, through sheer perseverance, that moral authority always belongs to the oppressed.

The voice rising from the ruins of Gaza is a wake-up call for the entire Ummah. It reminds us that a life of dignity has always demanded sacrifice. The martyrs of Palestine have written in their blood an eternal truth: no matter how long the night of oppression lasts, the sun of justice will rise. What is needed now is for the international community, and above all the Muslim Ummah, to break its silence. Those who claim to champion human rights must move beyond words and take real, practical steps.

The sacrifices of the Palestinian people will never be in vain. History bears witness: when a people choose death over submission, no force on earth can enslave them. When the historian of the future writes the story of Palestine, on one side will stand the record of modern-day pharaohs and their terror. On the other will stand the memory of those courageous men and women, and their leaders, who kept the torch of freedom alight with their own blood.

This is not merely a war. It is the voice of truth against falsehood, and it will not fall silent until the sun of freedom rises over the horizon of Palestine.

We pray that Allah Almighty elevate the ranks of Palestine’s martyrs, accept their sacrifices, grant full recovery to the wounded, send His unseen aid upon them, and bestow upon this oppressed people the dawn of freedom they have kept alive in their eyes for eight long decades.
