Tunnel Warfare: The Historic Resilience of the Palestinian Mujahideen

Hassan Mujahid

The tunnels of Gaza, now recognized as a strategic and unbreakable weapon, form a hidden world beneath the earth. This underground realm bears the imprint of years of toil, perseverance, and quiet jihad by the Palestinian Mujahideen. Despite suffocating blockades, unrelenting surveillance, and nearly impossible conditions, these warriors carved out tunnels, widened them, fortified them, and ultimately transformed them into a decisive instrument of war.

From the depths below, fighters would emerge without warning, launch fierce attacks, strike devastating blows, seize enemy weapons and supplies, and then vanish back into the unseen arteries beneath the land. To the Israeli military, this became an enigma so confounding that no solution existed. Just as the Messenger of Allah (PBUH) turned the digging of the trench into a masterstroke that secured victory, the tunnels of Gaza have become a new, unseen, and humbling strategy, one capable of bending the occupiers to defeat.

An Underground Battle Against Hunger and Breath

In these tunnels, some young men achieved martyrdom. Others were captured when they surfaced for a moment’s search for food or water. Still others are missing, their fate unknown. What defies belief is how young fighters survived beneath the surface for days and nights, deprived of nourishment and water, yet continued to hold the Qur’an in their hands, reciting its verses, standing before their Lord in the darkness, their voices lifted in raw, tear-filled supplication that echoed through the tunnels.

These fighters surrendered even the simplest gift of life, the ease of breathing, a blessing every human takes for granted. With oxygen scarce, each hour hovered between life and death. Yet the illumination of faith filled their hearts so completely that the blackness around them seemed lit with a heavenly glow.

A Mujahid who grapples with suffocation in the pitch-black confines of the tunnel, who endures night after night of hunger, who embraces hundreds of nights in isolation, who longs for the voices of his brothers, remains unaware of his family’s condition, and knows nothing of what unfolds across the region or the world, yet still refuses to complain, refuses to weaken, refuses to surrender, that Mujahid carries a debt upon the entire Ummah. Through his faith, his endurance, and his unwavering fortitude, the pages of history are inked and immortalized.

O Gallant Mujahideen of Gaza!

You are blessed. You stood with bare hands against the most ruthless military power of the modern age. You confronted betrayal at home and abandonment abroad. The world sanctioned you, your neighbors disowned you, the powerful turned away. Yet you did not break. You did not waver. The banner of your faith never fell.

You passed one of the hardest trials a believer can face. You illuminated your Hereafter and proved yourselves true in your devotion and love for Allah.

May Allah Almighty uplift the living among you, and may He grant your martyrs the honor of nearness and the eternal blessing of beholding His Divine Presence. Ameen.
